Callen’s Corner: Challenge #2

Callen lovers, NCIS:LA fanfic writers, and everyone else, rejoice! I am posting another Challenge!!! This one is a little harder than the last one, but I hope you’ll find a few hours or so to give it a go. The winner gets an incredible prize. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand, another, second, incredible prize will be awarded to one of the Reviewers/Cheerleaders of those writing.

THE CHALLENGE, FOR WRITERS: Write a short fic about Callen and Buddy the dog. Tell us about how they met, or how they interacted with each other, or what it was like when Callen had to give him up.

Here are the RULES for the writers:

Yes, we know Tracy is around, but we want the story focused on Buddy and Callen. Sorry, but no romance. Mention Tracy, yes, fine, great. But NO making out, gushy mush, or necking. If we judge the fic to have too much “romantic stuff” in it, it will be disqualified from getting mentioned.
Entries must be posted on Fanfiction.net with the words “NCISLAMagazine Challenge 2” in the description.
No rated M entries allowed.
All entries must be enabled to receive anonymous reviews.

THE CHALLENGE, FOR EVERYONE ELSE: For each of you who wish they could write, (or wish they had time to write,) we need you to be cheerleaders. And, guess what? Doing so will get you entered in a drawing for a second prize, set apart solely for those commenting! We need you to read the fic entries and comment on Fanfiction. We will post the links to the stories as they become available on the NCISLAMagazine Board (see link below.) If you go comment and cheer, we will enter you in the drawing. Good? Great!

Callen’s Corner: What If Amy Had Lived?

Notorious, Callen’s drive to find his family. Searching hard, as after the treasure of a lifetime, he goes from clue to clue, whenever he can, grasping at anything that will give him a hint to who he is, where he came from, and the family he never had. Or, rather, the family he remembered having.

Then, there was the case that led them to Keelson. A man who had all the answers that Callen ever wanted. And Callen was forced to shoot him. We were so glad that Keelson wasn’t able to play Callen anymore, but we mourned for the loss that occurred when G pulled that trigger. So sad.

But then, a spark of hope.

Keelson’s secret lair led us to her.

Even the words on a giant screen were enough to give us all chills.

Who was she? And what was she to Callen? Were they even related? Was this a cruel trick of coincidence? Callen didn’t think so. At least, that was my guess. Disobeying direct orders from Hetty was the true hint of how curious he was. He just had to know.

And he found her. Amy Callen.

But, it wasn’t her.

It was Hannah Lawson. The woman who had switched names with Amy Callen when they were teenagers. Amy had died with her name, and she lived with Amy’s. A tragedy of momentous proportions. And, this was when Callen had finally remembered.

He’d had a sister.

And she had died when he was about eight years old.

Break out the tissues.

A few weeks back, NCISLAMagazine had a poll asking who in G Callen’s family you fans wanted to be alive. The number one answer was “his father.” Seems a lot of you think that it would make a great twist to things if the man is alive and able to interact with Callen. The answer that surprised us, was the one garnering the second-highest amount of votes: “his sister Amy, not really dead.”

So, wait… Let’s explore what would have changed if she had actually been alive. Imagine that Callen goes looking for “Amy Callen”, and he finds her. What would his response be?

Besides questioning the poor woman for days straight, I think there would be certain answers that would come out of it.

He would find out what Amy remembered about their parents. Why they were in Romania. Why they were left in orphanages and foster homes following their mother’s death. Why they were split up. He’d discover what Amy was like, and about her dislikes and favorites. He’d learn how much she loved him, and discover how much love he could direct at someone with his own blood. And, finally, he would have someone to connect years of “alone” with, changing things to “not alone.” Finally.

He would also learn about their heritage. Maybe even about what type of parents they’d had.

Especially concerning Clara…

Amy was three years older, at least. That’s at least three more years to learn their mother. What kind of habits did Clara have? What would happen when they’d get praised as children? What would happen when they were in trouble? What did Clara practice when it was bedtime? Were there rituals? Lullabies? I love you’s whispered?

Amy would remember.

And, if Amy had lived, her hugs would have been a soothing extension of Clara’s embrace.
Callen could have experienced so much healing in a single hug from Amy.

If Amy had lived.

If only.

Callen’s Corner: Sleeping Habits

All heroes have a habit or two that makes us wonder about them.

G Callen is no different. The habit we talk about the least, is the one that makes G the most interesting in my book: his sleeping habits. Granted, we don’t have much proof of what those habits are exactly, based off of what we’ve seen so far. Only four times have we seen Callen asleep. (And, no, we are not going to count the time he got a concussion from those military extremists, ELE. He was unconscious by someone else’s doing, not because he chose to take a nap.) However, from these, we are able to gather a few conclusions about Callen’s sleeping habits. And these can do us until the powers that be bring us something new to add to the mix.

The times we’ve seen G asleep start with that precious moment when dear Hetty covered an exhausted G Callen with a blanket as he slept on the couch at Headquarters.

Next, was the intense nightmare that involved a parkour-filled chase, ending when G loses the man he’s chasing on a roof. He opens his eyes, and he’s at the office, on the couch, and Hetty’s watching him, holding a cup of tea for him. She needs him awake, with a clear mind. He goes on to shake off the dream and lead the Team to victory, same as always. Yet, this part left me wondering something. How early in the morning does Callen find it still allowable to take a catnap?

Because Sam Hanna, himself, said that G doesn’t sleep. “He catnaps.”

Then, of course, there was the time he fell asleep on the return overseas flight, as did the rest of his Team. This one was rather adorable, because he was asleep with Kensi leaning on him.

And, finally, there was that US Military Supply Transport. Granted, Callen was dozing, but we all assume that he was about to knock out for several hours.

I do have my own thoughts about the probability of Callen having secretly taken anti-motion-sickness pills, since being in a confined space like this would be a tragedy for anyone who suffers from motion-sickness. It would be a great explanation for Callen feeling free to sleep in the presence of others who are awake and chatty… Even if this wasn’t a normal sleeping situation.

Sam has perhaps the most experience with G’s sleeping habits. He has mentioned that Callen ‘barely’ sleeps, and has told Kensi that ‘he doesn’t sleep so you can’t’. Now, taking that, and mixing it with Nate’s insomnia question from Callen’s return after his shooting, we get a picture painted of a guy who really doesn’t like to sleep. Or, has had such a troubling life, he just can’t.

So.

Here’s what we know.

Callen has a bedroll that he prefers to sleep on. And, maybe even the floor seems like a better alternative to beds. (To bad Hetty won’t let him bring it to work…)
He likes the couch at work for catnapping.
Callen gets his sleep in small spurts.
He dreams at least occasionally about the latest things in his life.
He twitches when he dreams.
If he feels safe, he can turn off his brain fairly easily and sleep on demand. (Need further research on this, but I know he doesn’t worry about closing his eyes around Sam. Like the end of that day when they took down ELE.)
Sleeping on a plane is no problem.

These observations are yours for consumption, Callen Fans. Sound off. Callen’s sleeping habits just became discussion material. And, whoever is squeeing over there in the back, calm down, or I’ll take the pictures down.

Trying hard not to show amusement.

Hetty is tasking him with ending her when it’s obvious that she’s gone senile enough to blather all she knows to a world that should never know. Remember, if using a pillow, use synthetic. She’s allergic to feathers.

Callen just says okay. And sips his tea.

My squee for this picture is over the trust going on here. Callen is sipping tea from Hetty’s good china. He’s listening to her fears about the future. He offers to go undercover as an orderly to smuggle her the good tea (not in bags– because bagged teas taste like paper). She is grateful for him. And Callen doesn’t laugh.

So. Sweet!

The best part of this quote is that this is the FIRST TIME we hear about G Callen having a weakness. A phobia. Whatever. Something that makes him human.

Exciting, isn’t it?

Oh, and Callen sorta yelled at Sam… Of course, none of us blame G for that. After all, he had just been cut and dusted with the botulinum toxin. His life was literally passing before his eyes when Sam tackled him into the mall fountain.
