Ok, I forgave Callen on 5×03 for being as a** to Deeks but now he has gone too far.
Fine, you’ve saved your partner’s life, but have you ever been brutally tortured for his sake? I don’t think so mr Callen so back off!
From the beginning of the season he hasn’t showed a sign of sensitivity towards Deeks or thanked him for saving Sam. Not cool Callen. If he keeps treating him like an outsider Deeks is going to snap at some point and it is not going to be pretty! Especially now that he doesn’t have Kensi around to keep him calm.

I so agree with you Evi. Callen needs to cut him some slack. Deeks has proven himself time and time again. Thank goodness Sam has finally appreciated him. He not only saved his wife’s life, but he saved Sam from the bottom of the pool. Will it take Deeks being tortured to save Callen for him to finally accept him? I sure hope it doesn’t come to that.

Yes, Callen is being a jerk, or worse. It was his plan that got both Sam and Deeks captured and tortured, but has he ever taken responsibility for that?

At least Sam is being sympathetic, but I don’t like the implication from this clip that somehow Deeks is messing up or just can’t hack it without his Wonder Woman partner. The guy is supposed to be a professional, but apparently not according to this writer, whose name has been on 2 of the worst and most demeaning Deeks episodes ever to hit the airwaves (Dead Body Politic and Big Brother).

I’ve been wary of this episode ever since I saw who wrote it, and I really wish the powers that be had entrusted Deeks’ first episode without Kensi to one of the other writers, someone who actually gets and respects Deeks. Wake me up for “Merry Evasion.” Or better yet, the next Kalstein ep.

      1. Evi

I agree! He never took responsibility for his action or apologized for nearly having them all killed. Deeks/ Sam/ Kensi/ Michelle…they all survived but not thanks to Callen!

Sam is supposed to be his partner and best friend, but he didn’t even visit him at the hospital.
Deeks didn’t only lose his partner. He lost his best friend and lover/girlfriend.
Sam is a changed man towards Deeks, but Callen behavior is unacceptable.

I am keeping JPK’s words that Deeks is a pro and will come out of this stronger that ever!

It wasn’t Callen’s plan that had Sidarov finding out Sam was a Federal Agent, it was Callen allowing Janvier to be out of his sight in the bathroom. He screwed up big time because as Senior Agent he never should have let Janvier out of his sight. But in his defense (somewhat) Kensi was also with them and she didn’t see the ink on Janvier’s eyes either. Callen really should have admitted what he did to everyone especially since he knew Janvier harbored revenge for him.
I still love Callen but he is definitely acting like an ass, as well as coming across as jealous of Sam’s new bond with Deeks in this clip.

Hello people! I agree with Evi, the truth is only now that deeks around without kensi hope the rest of the team more and have more support on approach?? but mostly callen the cold always remained with him, after the torture and saving his companion should show more gratitude deeks! I hope now that this just waiting for his beloved kensi!! treated like really deserves it WELL!! kensi and hope you miss and think of him???

  3. Richtsje

It sounds quite cold, but it is only a sneak peek… Who knows what happens next? This is the way Callen and sam share, maybe in the show there will be moments of grattitude towards Deeks. In the past, the two of them shared more than just banter, after all #personal f.i.

  4. Linda

I don’t agree with most of the comments here. Callen is not being cold nor is he showing a lack of respect. Remember, he has trouble expressing his feelings and can partly do so only through banter with Sam. Here he is trying to deflect Sam’s concern about Deeks. By the same token, he also often uses humour in his relationship with Deeks. That is in part the way he functions. We don’t know what could have been said or shared among all of the characters in the previous months. Months that we didn’t see. Deeks is smart and strong. He will not fall apart because Kensi is not there.

  5. Tara

I agree with Jan, the writer of this episode is not a really good writer. She was the one who wrote episode ‘Big Brother’. That episode was just bad!

As a Callen fan, someone reading this may think I am feeling defensive. But that is not the case. I think this little clip was just about the banter between two partners – just the way it always is. If Sam had said his car was black, Callen would have found something to say to the contrary, just to get the banter going. I didn’t see it as any kind of problem with Deeks.

And as Richtsje said, we don’t have the whole picture. Even when an episode is complete, we still don’t have the whole story. There just isn’t enough time in one episode. My honest opinion is that we (yes, even me) fill in the gaps with our own biases. If we are fans of one character, we assume they did the right thing between scenes, or between episodes. If a fan of another, we may feel they were slighted, or even hurt.

I enjoy Deeks’ character very much. He adds so much to the show. And even though Callen was fairly nonchalant about it, he defended, and even complemented Deeks, a few times in the beginning (even when Sam and Kensi were being a little hard.)

This next comment is just a random thought because I hear viewers say that Deeks is written as a nit-wit sometimes. I don’t see the writers portraying him like this at all. I think his character is comfortable with jumping into that goofy role. Whether because he has some emotional issues, or whether he just loves humor, it’s just his personality. And I don’t really think the writers are trying to make him look dumb. When we had Dom, we had someone who spouted off miscellaneous information almost constantly. So we as the viewer were made aware of what the agents already knew. Without Dom, I think the writers have Deeks ask questions so that we will know all the background information. Like I said, that was just a random thought. Not really relevant to this post.

Okay. Back to the subject. I sometimes am taken aback, as well, when Callen fails to show a little more “tenderness” or concern. But then I realize this is Callen we’re talking about. Even though he has shown some raw emotion when dealing with some family issues, he generally keeps his feelings buried when it comes to the team and the work they do. That’s how he is able to do what he does — that’s Callen.

      just one word:
      amen!

It is just what you said.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

      Thank you for that comment,JustDreaming-83

I just have to throw my 2 cents in….It’s hard to stay objective because I’m a Callengirl and I don’t like reading comments like the ones posted here.
First of all, G felt and probably still feels guilty for what happened to Sam and Deeks.
Now,let’s sum up this attitude towards Deeks: Ok,Marty likes to be goofy, has some funny ideas that’s why it’s not always easy to take him seriously,he likes to operate in an unconventional way which doesn’t change the fact that he is a great operator which, for those who forgot,Callen admitted it in the very first episode, Deeks joined the team.
The way I understand it Callen is not comparing himself to Deeks but Sam’s attitude towards him (G) and Deeks.
The reason why Sam doesn’t feel bad about G saving his life is that he never thought less of Callen no matter what happened. Marty on the other hand never lived up to Sam’s high standards(remember, the conversation they had in the finale of S4? )He was Sam’s “chewtoy” someone to make fun of.I don’t mean to say that Sam bullied Marty or anything like that. Marty has just never been his kind of operator.
One day, this cop saved the life of his wife and his own. Sam knows,he made a mistake and as honorable man he admitted it.
Deeks is in a dark place right now, there not a damn thing Sam can do about which makes him feel bad for every judgement he had on Deeks.

I agree it” about they especially callen show deeks some respect and would like the writters do the same.

  8. DeeksFan

    Hello everyone,

I don’t normally join in. You guys say it all. A question…

Did anyone else think it was weird the Sam says “he saved my wifes life” and he doesn’t mention the fact that Deeks saved his life as well. Is it possible he doesn’t know what happened?

    PS
I enjoy all of your comments very much.

  9. Laura

I think some of the writers (like this one) just come to work. Others, like Dave Kalstein really care about the product and relating to the fans, as well. But he can’t write every show (wish he could.) Keeping the team a bit “off balance” is a cheap way to build drama, and makes writing easier, and that is why (in my humble opinion) we see this here, even though it really should be way past its expiration date. Likewise, I think we will be treated to a sad Deeks, possibly even a somewhat unstable Deeks, because that, too, is the simple route to write.

On the other hand, Kensi’s role looks interesting, and I look forward to seeing what was so all-fired important about this mission that she and only she was qualified for it. Does anybody else feel that way?

As long as everybody gets some screen time I am happy because then I know they have job security.

The comments made against Callen here are obviously from people who do not know / understand Callen well. His character is one who finds it hard to express feelings freely except during certain moments when they overwhelm him then you’ll see a somewhat emotional Callen. But generally, he uses dry humour, wit and yes sometimes even sarcasm and anger to express himself.

In this short clip, I see Callen just bantering with Sam as normal. I’m not being biased by saying he doesn’t come across as having bad intentions towards Deeks. If you are true fans of the show, you’ll know that that’s normally how Callen and Sam banter with each other.

Furthermore, in ‘Ascension’, Callen did (and quite out of character, I might add) do something goofy in order to cheer Deeks up by putting in those fake teeth. It isn’t that Callen is insensitive or doesn’t care, he just has a different way of showing his concern / emotions. Callen too has been through a lot, not only Deeks!

Again, if you are true fans, you’ll remember that Shane Brennan said that the show is about Callen’s journey. It is not a Deeks / Kensi / Densi or any other characters’ show. Each character is given their time to shine in the show yes, but don’t make it as if the show is merely all about them.

If you don’t like a particular character or think the writer is doing a bad job, then it’s simple – don’t watch. It is totally unnecessary to bash another character (and thereby in essence, insulting fans of said characters) or writer of the episode just because that character / writer doesn’t conform to your idea of what is nice / not nice.

I agree with Linda and justdreaming (and some of the others) on that one. I don’t think this one scene should be overrated. As justdreaming said – it was just banter between Callen and Sam, like they do all the time. I don’t think it was meant to disrespect Deeks in any way.

Callen is not one to display his real emotions easily. How and to what extent the events in the season finale have affected him he will not show in public, I doubt even Sam will get to see this. Instead, as Linda and G pointed out, he uses banter and sarcasm as a means to express his feelings. This may not be the best way in some situations but that’s the way he works and it will take a long time for him to change that, if at all…

And let’s be honest, he is not the only one in the team who has difficulties communicating and expressing feelings. They all have their flaws and problems which is what makes them human and their characters interesting.

I think that even though most of the fans favor a certain character, we should all keep mind that what makes the show work is the entire team and their interactions, the mixture of different characters and not just one or two of them.

These are all good observations. And I love all of the team-members – Deeks being my fav – but Callen is awesome too. I don’t think anyone is “bashing” any of them – just trying to figure out why things are happening. It keeps us on our toes, so keep the twists and turns coming. Love this show!

You guys got all that bitterness towards Callen and a writer on the show from that clip? This is just Callen and Sam’s usual banter and we all know these sneak peeks into upcoming episodes are to draw in the millions to watch the show each week. Not once have I heard one of you having a go at Kensi for slapping Deeks across the face in Frozen Lake, or at Granger or Hetty for sending Kensi on assignment before Deeks even returns to the mission. Its just a show people. Fictitious characters that have been created by Shane Brennan and entertained us for four and a bit seasons. I see that Callen as team leader has to ensure his team are ready for assignment, tough and thinking clearly, as their lives depend on it. If Callen has shown tough love towards Deeks, its his way of ensuring Deeks won’t jeopardise anyone on the teams’ lives. They depend on each other out there fighting the bad guys. I think the writers on the show have done a great job writing Kensi out while Daniela has her baby. I would like to thank all the cast, crew and writers on the show for their long hours and creativity for producing an amazing show. I look forward to watching each and every episode as they come along.

Calling Callen an a** is in my opinion termed as bashing. If people are ‘just trying to figure out why things are happening’, there is no need to use that word. I’m sure we can ‘try to figure things out’ without any name calling.
