Callen’s Corner: Callen Vs Golf

20131216-130152.jpg

We’ve recently discussed Callen and exercise and discovered that he does workout quite a lot. But what about playing sports, such as golf? Back in Season 2 in Overwatch, Hetty approaches and catches Callen in the gym sneaking some of her Guava Syrup for his tea.

Hetty: “Do you think you’re clever? That you can read people, that you know things?”
Callen: “Well I’m an undercover agent for a highly respected agency, so (nods head), I’m going to go with yes.”

Callen is known for becoming whoever he needs to be for success in an operation. We’ve seen Callen train, shoot in the range and brush up on his languages. But what else does G Callen do to aid him in becoming whoever he needs to be for an alias?

If we go back to the beginning of NCISLA, to episode 2, ‘The Only Easy Day,’ we will remember seeing Callen on a golf course in a purple Johnnie O shirt. He was pretending to be Holgate’s partner, Morris Raspen, who had what the crooked LAPD Detective Rosen wanted. The money the SEALs had stolen at the cartel’s home. As Eric pointed out, “how are we going to get Rosen to confess, when his own people couldn’t?” Callen’s reply was, “because we’ve got what Rosen wants.” Rosen arrives on the golf course with Holgate in a golf buggy. Callen (as Raspen) is swinging his club to prepare to hit the ball.

Rosen: “The elusive Mr Raspen. Now I thought your buddy was kidding when he said the golf course…but I get it now. Public place, yet it’s wide open, so you can see anybody approaching, and you’d have to be a sharp shooter to get a shot from any real cover. How many SEALs have you got hidden around?”
Callen (as Raspen): “I’m just working on my short game.”

(S1E02 ‘The Only Easy Day’)

Nothing more had been mentioned about the game of golf until S3E21 ‘Touch of Death,’ when Callen brings the subject up with Sam in the challenger. They were looking for a doctor who had stolen the smallpox vaccine to save the planet. She was deluded to think that she could release the smallpox virus out into the environment to control the world’s population crisis.

Callen: After this is all over, I’m going to settle down somewhere quiet. Do some fishing, some golfing, build things.
Sam: What kind of things?
Callen: I don’t know. Whatever guys build when they retire. Hobby stuff.
Sam: Hobby stuff.
Callen: Yeah!
Sam: You don’t fish and you don’t play golf.
Callen: I’m not retired.

SKIN DEEP

20131216-131702.jpg

SAM: “Maybe the most ridiculous game ever invented.”
CALLEN: “It’s a metaphor for life, Sam. Nothing to react to but your own actions.”
SAM: “Doesn’t look like fun.”
CALLEN: “It’s just you, the ball, the course and your thoughts.”
SAM: “No one to throw the ball to, no one to catch it…”
CALLEN: “You just stare down your fears.”
[Sam scoffs]
SAM: “Didn’t take you for a golfer, G.”
CALLEN: “Never played a day in my life. Too scary.”

(S4E13 ‘Skin Deep’)

It’s interesting to look deeper into Callen and Sam’s words here in Skin Deep. Callen, who has a tendency to go lone wolf and Sam, the former Navy SEAL. Sam clearly shows his dislike for the game of golf because it’s not a team sport. However Callen on the other hand, would rather a sport that required time on his own. That’s where golf would suit the seasoned agent, rather than football or basketball, although we have seen Callen enjoy playing with his partner and the rest of the team.

So is it possible that Callen has had lessons in the sport of golf to aid himself in a future alias, such as seen in ‘The Only Easy Day?‘ He looked comfortable on the course with the club in his hand and at ease talking to Rosen about his short game. If you look back at Sam’s expression when Callen talks about golf in Skin Deep, it’s clear to see surprise in the former SEAL. One has to wonder, when he dropped the subject in Touch of Death with Sam in the challenger. Perhaps Callen is testing the waters to see if Sam has figured his secret past time out?

What are your thoughts on the subject? “The possibilities are endless” (a quote from Deeks in Frozen Lake).

Callen’s Corner: Callen And Exercise

20131203-212720.jpg

It is obvious from watching G Callen saving the day from terrorists and taking down the bad guys, that he does a lot of exercise. From chasing after suspects, running away from being shot at or from an explosive device, to combat fighting. But to be able to survive these encounters, a Federal Agent needs to be well tuned in skills and to be in great physical health. We have seen Callen train in the gym in the Office of Special Projects, mainly to train for the job and to be up to the daily tasks but not entirely so. He uses exercise to relax, to calm down, to ponder about things or maybe even to kill time. Such examples are: when he went for a swim at the beach (S4E01 ‘Endgame’) to fill in his free time while pretending to being a rogue agent;

20131203-213158.jpg
he has joined his partner in going for a run when Sam needed him there for him (S1E11 ‘Breach’); and he’s used exercise to deal with emotions like the anger and hurt after Hetty told him about his Mother, where we saw him taking his frustrations out on the sandbag, boxing (S3E04 ‘Deadline’).

20131203-213512.jpg
What he does NOT do is work out to look good. While this is the main reason for many people to exercise (looking good) this is not Callen’s main motivation. Although this may be an interesting fact about G Callen, it is also very suitable for his character.

RUNNING

Sam: “You don’t work out.”
Callen: “I run.”
Sam: “When people are shooting at us!”

(S1E16 ‘Chinatown’)

20131203-212407.jpg

Callen: “I’m just running down a tip, Hetty.”
Hetty: “Run quickly.”

(S2E15 ‘Tin Soldiers’)

SAM’S CONCERN

Yet his partner Sam Hanna is constantly at him for not looking after himself. In (S2E19 ‘Enemy Within’), Sam suggests Callen to take up Pilates to look after his body, from all the jumping out of cars and the injuries his body endures on the job. Watching a stiff and limping Callen did bring out some humor with his limp being liken to a ‘nice gangster walk’ by one member of the Callen’s Corner Dream Team. However, not surprisingly, Sam’s lectures seem to just roll off G.

Perhaps Sam is justified by his concern when Callen decided filling his belly with food (S2E09 ‘Absolution’) or staying behind while letting Sam and Detective Chin Ho Kelly do the chasing (S3E21 ‘Touch of Death’), instead of running.

WORKING OUT

Jumping fences, run to catch
real life is enough
sports for G. Callen himself
escaping the enemy
running is required
thin line between life and death

20131203-220201.jpg

We’ve also seen Callen bike riding (S4E04 ‘Dead Body Politic’), indoor rock climbing against Hetty (S2E13 ‘Archangel) and Deeks (S5E04 ‘Reznikov, N’), playing basketball with Sam and the rest of the team (S3E18 ‘The Dragon and the Fly’), sparring with Sam and Kensi (S4E03 ‘Fifth Man’) and fighting the Avatar sparring machine called the nexersys system (S3E23 ‘Neighborhood Watch’)
20131203-220809.jpg

Callen: “Do not mock the nexersys system. That thing will kick your ass.”
Sam: “What this faceless machine? I’m old school. No way a computer can give you a better workout than a real sparring partner.”
Sam: (Callen throws Sam some gloves) “Oh!”
Callen: “State of the art technology. More demanding than a human.”
Nell referred to it as “the real steel match.”

So what do you think about G Callen and Sam’s concern over him not taking care of himself? Should he need to workout more or take up Pilates? From the research we have down on this subject, Callen seems to do a lot of exercise.

Callen’s Corner: Callen’s House

CC_600x100

The element of G Callen meets the element of something stable in his life for the first time: a house.

Not a home, but definitely the next best thing.

Formally a home belonging to his foster parents of long ago, the Rostoff Family, Hetty procured the house for Callen after Alina’s passing.

Go with us through the poignant images…

We watch him stop and look at the house from the outside, soaking in the moment. Though his stay with the Rostoffs was short, he had lived with this foster-family longer than any other… The familiarity of the key being hidden in the same place seems to bring him some sort of comfort. He opens the door and are able to see the house just as his foster sister Alina left it… And, by the look in his eyes when he steps through the door, it must have been very close to the way his foster parents had kept it. Whether it was the memory of the way it felt beneath his feet or the sound it made, or both, G seems amused when he steps onto the grate in the floor. He recalls Mrs. Rostoff there in the kitchen. She turns around in his memory and gives him a sweet smile. He plays with his “little sister” in another memory. He and Alina look so happy. Callen goes into one of the bedrooms and sits down on the very bed he slept on when he stayed there, years ago. He opens the closet door and runs his fingers over where he had carved his name and the date. More memories flood his mind. And, judging from the half-smile and the look of wonder in his blue eyes, they were good memories.

Callen allowed Hetty to railroad him into buying the house. He could have found a way to get out of it if he’d really wanted to. His accepting the house represented his willingness to attempt staying in one place. Or, as Dr. Nate Getz would add, allowing himself to heal just that much more.

Since coming home? Callen hasn’t purchased much furniture for his home. In fact, it’s sort of bare. He’s never owned much, so he doesn’t see the need for anything but the basics. He sleeps on his bedroll, as he’s done since he moved in three years ago. The only form of entertainment in the house is his chessboard, which he leaves on the floor. It may be a slightly sad situation, furnishings-wise, but it has created an opportunity for some great dialog:

G Callen: [a chair catches Callen’s eye] “That’s a nice chair.”
Sam Hanna: “What would you know? You don’t own any furniture.”
G Callen: “Well maybe it’s time I got a chair.”
Sam Hanna: [huffs] “Yeah!”  [clears his throat and looks at the price tag] “$3,700.”
G Callen: “I don’t need a chair.”

[Sam walks into the armory, Deeks and Kensi on his heels.]
Sam Hanna: “Someone broke into Callen’s house last night.”
Kensi: “What?”
Deeks: “Did they steal anything?”
Kensi: “He’s got nothing to steal.”

[Callen unlocks his front door and turns in the light. We get a glimps of his living room for the first time. There’s a single chair, a side table with a few books on,and a tall lamp in the other corner. He walks into the kitchen, throws his keys on the bench and opens the fridge. Beer and a Chinese takeaway box from the previous night can be seen inside. He opens the bottle and throws the bottle top into the sink. He hears a creak.  He closes the fridge and grabs his gun. He walks closer to the living room doorway, until he hears the footsteps. He looks and sees Hetty.]
Hetty: “I like what you’ve done with the place.”
G Callen: “Okay now. If this is about Arkady, I can…”
Hetty: “I would have done the same thing myself. No. This is about you, Mr. Callen. I know that you are looking for answers, but the thing about the past, is just that. It’s the past. Today is what’s important. And, I for one, am glad you’re here. I brought this for you. [Hetty passes a bag to Callen]
G Callen: “What did you buy me, a plant?” [takes it out of the bag]
Hetty: [laughs] “It’s an epiphyte. It’s perfect for you. [Callen sits down on his chair] It doesn’t require soil, you don’t need to water it. It absorbs moisture from the air. It doesn’t even need roots. But they make it more stable.
[Callen looks up at Hetty.  He knows she is referring to him.]

Callen seems to work well with the house, yet he’s always alert and prepared to leave. He’s used to leaving. Something he learned as a child – something not easily overcome. Perhaps this will change when more light is shed on his past and he finds closure?

What do YOU think?
