Childhood
The beach provides Callen with a special connection with his childhood. The few real memories he has of his Mother, Clara. Most of which he doesn’t remember, but perhaps the smell of the fresh sea air is a comfort to him because of it was some place he used to go to with Clara and his sister Amy. Outings, he doesn’t remember, but the scent is stored in his memory, making him feel like he’s home. And since these are rare and emotional moments for him, he prefers to spend time there alone.
Venice Beach
Sam stated that Venice Beach was the place of the crazies, in which Callen replied that he used to live there. So why did Callen choose to spend much of his time near Venice Beach? We believe it had much to do with the anonymity it afforded him. It was a haven for people looking to leave their old identity behind, blend in and become anonymous. Venice Beach afforded him a type of cover, a way of blending in even after he was discovered. He could become a ghost. He felt safe there, and it was the meeting place chosen by Callen and Sam, if either of them got burned.

Callen and the beach – what a great topic!
Wonderful bromance moments with Sam, emotional and touching moments with flashbacks from his childhood that left us feeling with him, a place to to ponder and a place to get lost and relax.
Not to forget that Callen in a wetsuit is definitely a sight worth looking at (just saying… ☺ )
Thanks, Vicki, love it!
The topic is great and it is true, whenever you see pictures of Callen on the beach, he seems to be relaxed. I do hope the writers will find opportunities to shoot more beach-moments.
